Apologetics

Apologizing for the Faith

Apologetics is such a crazy word, especially since Christians worldwide know it to mean 'a defense of the faith'. Apologetics is based on the idea that our faith needs defending, that it can't stand on it's own merit. No wonder it can't when the modern church has twisted every bit of the gospels and other passages to suit themselves. So we have to defend our faith because the words have lost their power to the common folk. Apologetics to me always meant Apology. If you're apologetic about something, you're admitting fault or guilt and asking for forgiveness for an incorrect or harmful action. That seems to be a more fitting definition for what the church has done to the bible message, to our understanding of God and the universe, to the Messiah, and everything in between. The church should say its sorry for twisting verses about tithing and making people poor and unable to pay their bills, it should apologize for creating a cookie cutter pattern for good Christian living, and expecting anyone who sets foot in the sanctuary to bend to their pattern of behavior, dress, hairstyle, music, eating, sleeping, reading... you get the idea. I want an apology for pastors teaching false doctrines and calling them divine inspiration, like you speak for the almighty. I want a big 'so sorry about that' for allowing televangelists to parade around on stage like proud roosters spitting at their audiences as they boast of their rolex and mercedes that God has given them - and if you're poor you must be doing something against God's will - so give more of your hard earned paycheck. I think they should ask forgiveness for rewriting the bible so many times it's original meaning is gone, or taking one scripture and making it into a way of life - purely out of context of the original message. I know I'll probably never hear them apologize for it all, but it's nice to know that they base their defense with a word which denotes their mistakes.
