Lovers of Christ
We're taught through our lives as Christian believers to love Christ, because He first loved us. That God is love, and it was because God so loved the world that He gave His son for sacrifice that we all might find redemption through Him. Lately the stir and contraversy rages about the whole 'Code' thing (you know what I'm talking about), the horrid thought that Jesus the Son of the living God could have the capacity to love Mary Magdelene not only as a sister in Christ, a 'saved' individual, but more than that - a wife, a lover, a companion. The mental melt-down I've heard about this idea on tv, radio, people debating it around the water coolers... and almost all of them come to the conclusion that there's no way Jesus the son of God could do such a thing - after all, He's without sin.. He's the son of God for Christ's sake.. or.. for His own sake I guess. But if we are taught that Jesus is the embodiment of God on earth, and that God is love - the creator of us all, by which we are made in His image and likeness - then it stands to reason that Jesus could only love like God would love, even to the point of falling in love with a woman. "Chris you disgusting pagan devil worshipper." Oh I can hear some of you saying it. But just because you read the bible, go to church, listen to the pastor or buy him or her lunch once in a while doesn't establish that you knew Christ personally - and you'd be a liar to say you do. If you're over 2000 years old, lived in the middle east, and hung out with Jesus, or fed Him breakfast a time or two, you have a right to respond. But reading a highly edited book does not give you the ability to judge His life much less is personality, or His private life.
I say all of this to make this point. If Jesus loved Mary, as a believer, a companion, a lover, or a wife, that's great - His capacity to love her would be a reflection of God's ability to love us - and our innate built-in ability to love one another. Nuff' said.
